Abstract

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is widely used for
railway infrastructure monitoring in countries like
Germany, the UK, Finland, Austria and the USA.
Key applications include condition assessment,
quality control, planning support, and hazard
detection. Germany has used GPR for over 30
years, and the UK for over 20 years, primarily for
track analysis. Austria’s OeBB is among the few
fully integrating GPR into track condition analysis.
Despite high costs and complex data processing,
GPR use is growing, with AI integration enhancing
future data evaluation.
