Impact of UWB Antennas on Ranging Accuracy

Abstract

This work deals with the impact of antennas on the ranging accuracy of an ultra-wideband system. For two different antennas we tried to relate multiple commonly used antenna characteristics with the ranging error produced by the ultra-wideband system. Our analysis showed that parameters which do not incorporate information about the used transmit signal deliver only limited information. We can show that a detailed analysis using the angle dependent impulse response of the antenna as well as the transmit waveform is needed. Despite of that, we found that the fidelity factor provides the most information compared to other antenna parameters.
