Abstract

Especially in a century in which the electrical power supply is seen as the backbone of the functionality of societies the insulation co-ordination in high voltage systems has become an important topic for a reliable and economic operation. In this scientific field it is a special task to take into account the transient stress (switching over voltages or atmospheric discharges) inside this strongly meshed grid with its complex structures. This paper therefore deals with numerical methods for calculating transient voltage stresses to get new outputs for the operation of a network with the help of these very attractive and sophisticated assessment tools. High voltage systems and their components were modelled by adequate equivalent circuits in order to make a statement about the existing voltage stress. In some case examples it is shown how the use of surge arrestors in network nodes or over headlines lines can be better coordinated. Such work therefore makes a contribution to the network security in the sense of isolation co-ordination and serves to improve the reliability of the electrical energy supply.
