Abstract
ince integral bridges are frame structures, special characteristics must be considered in their design. A key aspect are the resulting stresses due to temperature and earth‐pressure loads as well as their interaction depending on the stiffness of the structure and the foundation, which will be investigated in this paper. Based on the resulting conclusion the effect of soft layers behind the abutment‐wall or in area of the pile head in case of deep foundations on the structure will be assessed. Finally, the transition zone between the bridge structure and the adjacent road will be examined and the special requirements for integral bridges will be demonstrated.
