Abstract

The optimization of the piston/bore interface still provides big challenges within engine development. This tribological system is highly stressed by the high temperature conditions as well as highly dynamic motions and forces. Furthermore, optimization is a tradeoff between reducing friction losses, extending durability and improving the sealing properties of the ring pack. Various analysis methods are an important part of the optimization process. Eventually, they influence the decision which material combination is implemented in the engine. However, they are often very limited in terms of resolution and transferability to the engine application. The presented Floating Liner engine, together with a continuous wear measurement, lube oil consumption and blow-by measurement, is a versatile toolbox for a fast and precise evaluation under application-near conditions. Together with a complementary tribosimulation, this toolbox is capable of facing many questions occurring within the development process.
