Abstract

An industrial shredder is a highly complicated industrial machine with an economic value added by about 45 %. The costs for development and manufacturing are in ratio to the number of units build very high and the gross margin is rather low. Generally, the cost pressure in this branch of industry is very high. The aim of the value analysis is to reduce the production costs and to increase the functional performance and the value (per definition of the value analysis). For this purpose, a functional assessment of the components and modules used is carried out to identify any components with a functional overfulfillment and to optimize them if necessary. To precise, the goal was to reduce the manufacturing cost (excluding engine assembly) by 10%.
The procedure is based on the value analysis according to ÖNORM EN 12973. The value analysis is a 10-step, holistic optimization process that can be applied to products or processes. The separate phases are divided into several subtasks. In the introductory phases of the value analysis, the preparation, the project definition and the project planning are taking place. Carrying on, there is a comprehensive data collection of the various sub-areas design, production, sales, service and other relevant areas. This is followed by an analysis of the data, regarding to costs and functions, where cost-critical components of the machine are evaluated in detail. In the next step, the idea collection and generation takes place concerning to the defined targets of the value analysis. After a first selection of the high-potential ideas, a detailed evaluation of the solution ideas takes place by reference to feasibility, costs/benefits, susceptibility to error, return on investment and other parameters. Afterwards holistic solution proposals are being developed, by using the best rated solution ideas. The solution proposals will be presented to the management and they decide about a possible realization.
Based on the implementation of several workshops together with Komptech and periodic presentations of the interim results, a close cooperation of the project partners is ensured, which is the fundamental requirement for achieving the project goals. Through this project, Komptech learns to understand the cost structures and the cost causers and with the implementation of the method value analysis, they are generating valuable knowhow to ensure a long-term competitive advantage.
