Abstract
The success or failure of a tunnel advance is significantly influenced by the behaviour at the
working face, the round length, the advance velocity and in case of poor rock, additional
support ahead of the face. Especially when installing the support ahead of the face, complex
three-dimensional load-bearing and deformation behaviour prevails at the working face. This
behaviour is defined by the stiffness ratio of the rock mass and the individual support meas-
ures, the stability of the face, the failure behaviour of the ground and the load-bearing sys-
tems of the support ahead of the face. For the different methods of support ahead of the
face, construction practice can draw on a wealth of experience. However, there is no uniform
view on the criteria of application, dimensioning and supervision of the support ahead of the
face. This can be attributed to the lack of quantitative stability and deformation investigations.
Only through an understandable and thus also checkable interpretation and examination of
the effectiveness of the support ahead of the face can the support be improved and used
more economically.
