Abstract

Efforts to replace fossil resources are not only motivated by their limited availability, but also by global warming and environmental pollution connected with their use as material and energy sources. Lignocellulosic biomasses (LB) are sustainable material and energy sources that are available and affordable. Polymeric hemicelluloses and celluloses of LBs can be broken down to their sugar monomers using enzymatic hydrolysis (Figure 1). These sugars can subsequently be used as carbon sources for the biotechnological manufacturing of value-added products.
