Measurement and Analysis of Brake and Tire Particle Emissions under High-Load Driving Cycles

Abstract

During the course of this research, the generation and characterization of non-exhaust emissions were investigated under high-load driving scenarios conducted on a chassis dynamometer. The concentration and elemental composition of these emissions were examined to shed light on their potential impacts on human health and the environment. Evaluating the concentration, composition, and size distribution of emitted particles is crucial for comprehensive assessment. To quantify particle levels and analyze their composition, various measurements were conducted using a Differential Mobility Particle Sizer (DMPS), an Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS), and an Optical Particle Sizer (OPS). Additionally, particles were collected using air filters. Continuous measurements revealed particle number concentrations exceeding 30,000 particles per cm³ in the exhaust air of the chassis dynamometer ventilation system. These particles primarily fell within the size range of 10 - 30 nm. Agglomerates consisting of a variety of elements were observed, with significant proportions of S, O, Fe, Si, Ba, and Mg determined through energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis.
