Abstract
Railroads are of increasing importance, especially since the modal split will develop towards rail in the future. However, the infrastructure is not able to grow at the same rate and must be adapted to the new requirements like higher train frequencies and higher loads. This is where the newly founded Institute of Railway Infrastructure Design, endowed by vaRS and headed by Ferdinand Pospischil, comes in. The institute's core topics are research on low-maintenance superstructure types with high endurance and building up targeted measurement technology in the laboratory as well as in track.
