Abstract

Keeping tunnel drainage systems operational re-quires to deploy less expensive and time-consuming main-tenance procedures. Therefore, the inter-disciplinary re-search project “PolyDrain” was initiated. This project com-prises conducting a survey of critical tunnels in Austria aswell as developing methods to decrease scale deposits indrainage pipes. The chosen approach is based on modify-ing the polymer matrix of drainage pipes by adding activefillers to obtain a final composite material. Accordingly, thedurability of pipes can be increased and/or the precipitationcan be reduced in the drainage, including areas of drainageslits. However, before these findings can be applied inlarge scale reality, further long-term evaluations—also inthe lab—are necessary.
