Abstract

Low birth rates and rising life expectancy lead to an adjustement of the age distribution in industrialised countries. The aging of the population induces a demographic modification which brings new challenges to society. The impact of the excess of age concerns retirement arrangements, working environment, economy and health care.
Health care needs to adjust to the aging of the population and the involved increase of age-related diseases, like chronic kidney insufficiency (CKI) and chronic heart failure (CHF). It is essential for both diseases to monitor the concentration of potassium in the serum.
Potassium-sensitive electrodes as well as potentiometric analytics methods to detect potassium are highly investigated domains in electrochemistry. Nevertheless the composition of the ionselective membranes is very variable and has to be adjusted to specific application (medical). Currently the measurement of potassium is realized by e.g. bloodgas analyzers or hospital central labs. The patients must at least visit the doctor once to receive information about their potassium level. The development of a single-use-diagnostic test strip for potassium would make it possible for the patients to monitor their potassium level at home. This development could increase the quality of the patient’s life and reduce the costs for health care.

The aim of this work was to develop a potassium-sensitive electrode which is able to measure the potassium concentration by potentiometric analysis in one drop of blood from the finger.
