Abstract

Surface peroxo species were produced by adsorption of O2 on a Pt(111) surface at 87 K. The reactivity of the peroxo species has been studied through the oxidation reaction of HCN using temperature programmed desorption (TPD) in the temperature range from 87 to 1100 K. The results show that the surface peroxo species is highly reactive for the HCN oxidation. Compared to oxidation by adatomic oxygen, the oxidation of HCN by the peroxo species exhibits different reaction channels with lower activation energies. The reactivity of surface peroxo may be analogous to the reactivity of metal-dioxygen complexes.
