Abstract
The various contributions to the topic refraction which were published during the past 25 years by avn are classified and briefly described. Their significance for the solution of the refraction problem is evaluated
for the scientific foundation as well as for practical but approximate solutions. Significant progress wasmade for the accurate measurement of the vertical refraction using the dispersion effect (i. e. variation with the wavelength). The approximate determination of the vertical refraction effect using atmospheric
turbulence along the line-of-sight will be developed. At the end an outlook is presented on solutions and challenges for the determination of refraction
