Abstract

HVDC transmission is becoming an ever more important issue at present. Simultaneously, MVDC transmission will increase in the future. A commercial 12/20 kV AC XLPE cable has passed the electrical type test specified in IEC 62895 and the optimized PQ test for MVDC cable systems. Therefore, an MVAC cable system should be fully qualified for DC operation at ±55 kV. However, IEC 62895 gives recom¬mendations for high voltage tests, but without considering the technical differences between HVDC and MVDC cables. The type test in IEC 62895 is thus analysed and an optimized type test for the MVDC level is proposed.
