Abstract
Ground state and low energy excitations of the Heisenberg Antiferromagnet (AF) are investigated by exact diagonalization and variational Monte Carlo. The spin-correlations of the trial wave function are in excellent agreement with exact diagonalization and also with recent neutron scattering results forLa2CuO4. We identify an excited triplet which becomes degenerate with the ground state, allowing for spontaneous symmetry breaking at T=0.
