Abstract
High pressure hydrogen production with a fixed-chemical looping system was recently shown in a lab-scale test bench. A release pressure of up to 50 bar was enabled directly from the fixed-bed system. In addition, a prototype system with an enhanced layout was developed and operated with synthetic biogas and methane steam reforming mixtures. A series of experiments was conducted to improve the feasible hydrogen purity exceeding 99.999% regarding total carbonaceous impurities. The hydrogen output was up to 10 kWLHV. The design includes a combined high-temperature reactor with a steam reformer and a chemical looping section for hydrogen purification, comprising of up to 18 kg iron-oxide based oxygen carrier material. In the chemical looping section, significant influences of the exothermic oxidation and endothermic reduction reaction are illustrated with axial and radial temperature profiles.
