Abstract

Energy consumption and CO2 emissions have been limited for passenger cars since 2015, and the limits will be further tightened by 2030. Since 2018, CO2 limits for heavy commercial vehicles have also been in force for the target years 2025 and 2030. However, these limits alone will clearly not achieve the goals of the EU Green Deal in the transport sector. For further reductions, transport must be converted to renewable energies by 2050. Battery electric drives offer the highest efficiency and low additional costs. Because of their short range and long charging times, they are not suitable for all vehicles or types of application. Further decarbonization in transport could be brought onto the EU Green-Deal path with renewable hydrogen or e-fuels (methanol or dimethyl ether from renewable hydrogen).
