Abstract

The present study describes a methodology combining economic and ecologic evaluations for a sustainable decision-making in regards to railway infrastructure. The presented life cycle assessment and life cycle cost calculation is executed for railway track and switches. These are the main driver for costs and environmental impacts of railway infrastructure. It is shown that the methodology of Standard Elements enables for evaluating costs as well as environmental impacts caused by infrastructure assets throughout the whole life cycle. Within this comparison for Austrian boundary conditions it can be illustrated that concrete sleepers equipped with under sleeper pads are the most economic and ecologic choice of superstructure for both turnout and switches.
