Abstract

In Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, serious flooding occurs regularly. During the rainy seasons a larger part of the run-off is stored in the low-lying parts of the city around the Abiot square and the Addis Ababa stadium, blocking the traffic in this area. Additionally the area has serious flood problems caused by the Bantyiketu River. The scope of this study was to examine the present state of the storm water drainage system in a limited area in the central pan of Addis Ababa. Develop a data set of the storm water drainage system of this part of the city for the pollution load simulation model SMUSI. Identify existing and resulting problems of this storm water drainage system and the consequences for the town-dwellers and the infrastructure. Suggest solutions for the renovation of the storm water drainage system and to examine these with help of the simulation model. In conclusion it can be said, that different approaches to solutions (partly with moderate costs) are conceivable.
