Abstract

New automated driving functions pose new challenges to the validation engineer. In the past, the analysis of vehicle data was sufficient. In the future, the influence of the environment and traffic on the vehicle will gain importance. The increasing complexity of the new driving functions requires real-world evaluation and validation tests on a complete-vehicle level. Therefore new infrastructure is needed, delivering precise data about the static and the dynamic content of the environment near the vehicle under test.
There are many test regions worldwide which offer such services. This presentation gives an overview about the different approaches of the providers and evaluates them. Most times the test regions are operated by universities or research entities. In contrast, the test region focused in this presentation is mainly run by two established companies and three research organizations. They offer a special tool chain, tailored to the needs of their customers, providing services from recording and analyzing data through to simulation of scenarios with different levels of detail. The difference to most other test regions is that the road is equipped with a huge set of different sensors. These sensors enable data to be recorded which cannot be detected by the vehicle being tested. Due to the usage of standardized data formats and interfaces this data can be used in every step during the development and validation process in an efficient way.
Compatibility with other test regions facilitates customer-oriented services during the validation process. Magna Steyr Engineering has many years of experience in validating functions on the complete-vehicle level and is a reliable partner for future challenges in the fields of automated driving.
