WHR Technology in ICE-based Propulsion Systems and its Experimental Investigation

Abstract

The development of drivetrains for passenger cars as well as commercial vehicles using
internal combustion engines (ICE) has undergone a long evolutionary improvement in the
last decades. Now, technology has reached a level where advances can be made in small
steps only, especially concerning efficiency. As customers as well as legislation request
further reduction of fuel consumption, the use of waste heat is the next logical step. This
can be done by different technologies, amongst them the implementation of a Rankine
steam cycle.
The display of basic technical options of waste heat recovery (WHR) systems for mobile
application, with a focus on Rankine steam cycles, makes up the first part of the paper,
giving an overview of this promising technology. The second part shows the special
requirements and technical solutions needed for the investigation of such systems,
especially of the expansion engine itself, under laboratory conditions. Therefore, a
dedicated steam test bench, built for the measurement of Rankine-cycle-based WHR
systems, is presented and analyzed and the most important details of this demanding
equipment is shown. Another essential section treats important findings concerning
expansion engines, rendered possible only through the possibility of a thorough and
reliable experimental investigation.
