Abstract
On slope stability analysis with different methods. Limit equilibrium methods such as the methods of slices are still widely used in practice to assess the stability and factors of safety of slopes and embankments. However, recent research shows that these methods may produce results significantly on the unsafe side. Alternatively numerical methods such as the finite element method can be applied, whereas two different formulations are possible. Firstly conventional displacement based finite element methods and secondly finite element limit analysis which are based on limit theorems of plasticity theory. It will be shown in this paper that numerical methods are to be preferred over limit equilibrium methods, even when a slightly higher computational effort has to be considered.
