Beschreibung
The HMU (Height Monitoring Unit) Linz is an airtraffic-surveillance-sensor used primarily for altitude control in the frame of the European RVSM (Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum) project. It is based on the multilateration-principle to calculate 3D-positions by using the delay-times of the aircraft's SSR response.
This project evaluated the HMU Linz aiming at its potential as a supporting sensor for aircraft approach surveillance (in this case in the terminal area of airport Linz/Hörsching).
As a consequence the HMU has to be evaluated according to EUROCONTROL air surveillance standards. Furthermore, because the height measurement by multi-lateration is not covered by these standards yet, additional methods have to be developed to determine the overall performance of the system.
