Methods for contactless temperature measurement in ball screws

Abstract

The feed axes of CNC machine tools are mainly equipped with ball screw drives. Has the feed axis no direct measuring system, the position accuracy of the axis is distinctly influenced by the heating of the spindle. By using the transient heat conduction equation for the on-line compensation of thermal expansion of the spindle, the nonlinear temperature distribution is considered. If the temperature is known at one point, it can be used as boundary condition for solving the differential equation. This paper shows the possibilities of contactless temperature measurement in ball screws. The problems in measuring the temperature of reflecting bare metal surfaces are discussed and the implemented solution is presented
