Abstract

Advanced driver-assistance systems must provide not only requested functionality but also meet safety requirements to prevent people from harm. Because of the various situations a vehicle comprising such systems has to cope with, implementing verification and validation measures is a critical task during development to meet given safety goals. In this chapter, we focus on system testing for advanced driver-assistance systems and discuss recent testing approaches as well as challenges faced when applying these approaches in the domain of advanced driver-assistance systems. We outline two approaches combining vehicle simulation and automated test case generation aimed at identifying critical scenarios in which such assistance systems may face difficulties when computing driving decisions. Furthermore, we summarize other testing approaches that have been published. In addition, we discuss future challenges and outline further research directions focusing on providing methods for certifying advanced driver-assistance systems.
