Abstract

Three industrial refiner types including double cone refiner, a double disc refiner, and a cylindrical refiner were compared based on four trials with different specific refining energy. All trials were performed under comparable conditions to be able to determine the influence of the refiner type on the resulting pulp properties. Classical laboratory methods were used to determine common pulp properties such as freeness, fibre length, breaking length and tear index to determine the differences in fibre treatment. The double cone refiner from the industrial fibre preparation showed the lowest increase in degree of beating and less fibre shortening than the two other aggregates. The goal of these trials was, beside the comparison of the aggregates, to verify promising results of laboratory refining trials in industrial applications.
