Abstract

The effect of different pre-treatment processes on cellulosic fiber structure and the accessibility of chemical groups of these fibers were investigated. The accessibility of the fiber was improved using two pre-treatment processes that include, chemical bleaching of fibers, and tensionless alkali treatment. The effect of these processes on the structure parameters was evaluated using viscosity measurements and iodine sorption ability measurements. The results show that pre-treatments increase the sorption ability and the Helmholtz surface energy, while they decrease the contact angle.
