The Christian Doppler Laboratory for Multiphysical Simulation, Analysis and Design of Electrical Machines aims at the development of robust and reliable computer aided tools for the optimal design of multiphysical systems which are additionally constrained by possibly unknown tolerances (e.g. regarding material characteristics). In order to attain this target, it is necessary, as a first step, to solve still open scientific problems concerning transient phenomena, three-dimensional effects, uncertain / unknown material characteristics, flow and cooling conditions, etc. In further steps, the best possible coupling of the various simulation methods should be treated. Measurements should inherently accompany the research in the frame of the Laboratory both to validate the methods developed and to allow gaining new knowledge (e.g. about flow conditions within electrical machines). Special consideration shall be paid to the treatment of uncertainties and tolerances by means of statistical and probabilistic approaches and robust design. Electrical machines are prime examples of multiphysical systems (involving electromagnetics, thermal issues, acoustics, mechanics, structure mechanics, fluid dynamics), however, the results achieved in the Laboratory or parts thereof could be relevant for other systems with multiphysical aspects.

The Laboratory is structured in 4 modules:
Modul 1 - Noise prediction, Modul 2 - Thermal analysis, Modul 3 - Electromagnetics, Modul 4 - Coupling and validation
