An absolute scalar magnetometer offers precise measurements of the magnetic fields magnitude. In space it is used for improving the absolute accuracy of vector magnetometers which measure also the direction of the magnetic field. In several cases, like for the upcoming Jupiter Ganymede Orbiter (JGO) mission by ESA, full science return can only be achieved by a combination of vector and scalar magnetometers.
The aim of this project is the uplift of the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of a new type of scalar magnetometer called Coupled Dark State Magnetometer (CDSM). The CDSM is a promising candidate for the JGO magnetometer application and highly supported by the JGO magnetometer consortium. Advantages of the CDSM are the simple sensor design, the high dynamic range of more than 6 decades and the omni-directional measurement capability without additional design compexity.
