Description

In order to keep the targets adopted at the climate summit in December 2015, i.e. to keep the rise in the global average temperature well below two degrees Celsius compared with the pre-industrial level, significant joint efforts by politicians, industry and business are required. The steel industry is also called upon to make its contribution to achieving the climate targets, which involves significant financial and technological efforts. There are two main technological approaches to this: a) Development of more resource-efficient steel production routes b) Development of highly innovative steels that enable significant indirect CO2 savings through longer service lives and less weight. IMAT is involved in Objective 2 of the overall project: Chain manufacturers want material innovations that enable significant weight savings while simultaneously increasing low-temperature resistance. Therefore, the objective of this project is to develop chain wires which can withstand temperatures as low as -60°C and which, due to their high strength (grade 120), allow downsizing of the chain link diameters and thus significant weight savings, and which can also be welded using simple processes.
