Information visualization (infovis) involves the visual representation
of and interaction with information spaces to facilitate their rapid
assimilation and understanding by human users. The central challenge
of infovis is to design a cognitively useful spatial mapping of data
or information which is not in itself inherently spatial. Infovis
draws on the intellectual traditions of several fields, including
computer graphics, human-computer interaction, cognitive psychology,
semiotics, graphic design, statistical graphics, cartography, and art.
