Description

Due to the constant increase in nonlinear power electronic loads the power quality diminishes. With the help of an active power filter which compensates the harmonics in the grid the power quality can be improved. This paper evaluates an advanced control technique for a shunt active filter. The control technique introduces additional rotating frames of reference for each harmonic that is to be compensated. These transform previously oscillatory current references to d.c. values, thereby improving the steady state performance of the current controllers. The effectiveness of this technique is verified in simulation using MATLAB/SIMULINK®. The simulation is followed by testing the control technique on a laboratory model. The results have proved that the control structure used is appropriate.
