Abstract

Pipe structures for steel hydraulic engineering and steel masts are often susceptible to fatigue. For two very common constructional details, i) thickness transitions at circumferential butt weld with varying bevel angle and ii) ring stiffener joints (outside stiffeners) and pipe flange joints, tabulated hot spot stresses are presented and the accurate fatigue verification is shown. The tabulated hot spot stresses are also suitable for an elastic verification in the ultimate limit state. The background for the presented nomograms to determine the hot spot stresses, available for axial loads Δnx and also for circumferential stresses Δσφ due to internal pressure Δpi, is presented. Two examples show the procedure with the developed nomograms in practice and also show the accuracy compared with the presented numerical FE-results.
