Abstract
Modern yield and quality oriented viticulture makes it necessary to perform plant protection by application of high amounts of chemical pesticides in order to control fungal pathogens. Within these pathogens the control of Botrytis cinerea, causing the grey mould disease of grapes, comprises a great challenge.
Biological control is the application of microorganisms beneficial to the growth and health of plants.
Due to their inhibiting effects directed towards fungal pathogens, biological control agents proffer an alternative to the application of fungicides and copper preparates used in traditional viticulture.
This work presents results of a screening for biocontrol agents against Botrytis cinerea. Following in vitro antagonism assays most promising strains were tested in a field trial. Possible application of
these strains and aspects of ecology and diversity of grapevine associated microorganisms are discussed in this paper.
