Abstract
Carpentry joints are essential components of any historic timber structure. Only by considering the load behaviour of the joints (often non-linear, eccentric and flexible) the structural beha-viour of many of these structures can be determined realistically. At first the types and a classification are described to contribute to a better understanding of the variations of these joints. Afterwards the complex load-bearing capacity and load-bearing behaviour of carpentry joints are explained. Opportunities for a realistic modelling are demonstrated and magnitudes of the most important spring stiffnesses are given
