Modelling, analysis and implementation of the HyMethShip concept for sustainable ship propulsion

Research output: Contribution to journalConference articlepeer-review

Abstract

HyMethShip is a marine propulsion concept featuring a methanol-based closed-loop carbon cycle with on-land methanol synthesis using hydrogen and carbon dioxide and onboard methanol decomposition to hydrogen used for propulsion and carbon dioxide to be recycled. This concept combines the benefits of well-known liquid fuel bunkering and storage with carbon dioxide emission-free hydrogen combustion in large-bore engines. The HyMethShip has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 95 % while virtually eliminating sulfur oxide and particulate matter emissions and reducing nitrous oxide (NOX) emissions below Tier III levels. In this study an overview of the HyMethShip concept implementation and the technology demonstration are presented. Additionally, the modeling and simulation approach used for the assessment of the performance potential and the sensitivity study is presented.
