Abstract
At the Climate Change Conference (COP21) , India took the global energy community by surprise when the country agreed to the amended 2°C climate goals, and to reduce its carbon intensity of energy to 33% of its 2000 levels by the year 2030. The energy system in India, at present being severely coal intensive, characterized by a very high rapidly growing electricity demand and facing several challenges, is expected to undergo a major transition towards clean energy. A transition of such a magnitude would not only have several implications on the country‘s electricity system and economy, but also on the immediate neighbors and their respective energy systems. In this study, the focus is on the development of a techno-economic simulation model for the India subcontinent system, for an clear analysis and study of how these electricity systems develop until the year 2050.
All the elements in the model ATLANTIS_India like nodes, transmission lines, and power plants are modelled into the system with geographical accuracy, to provide a real-life overview of the electricity system. Additionally, the demand distribution is segregated with weightages dependent upon population, industrial activity and agriculture at each respective nodes. Several scenarios focusing on Renewable Energy expansions like Photo-Voltaic, Wind, Hydro power technology are to be designed and simulated.
