Abstract
A fully three-dimensional (3D) formulation of the plasma equilibrium is introduced based on the finite element method. The current density and the flux density are described by vector potential functions represented by edge elements. The formulation is validated by showing that the algebraic equations resulting from it are satisfied by the solutions of the axisymmetric Grad-Shafranov equation.
