Abstract
The condition of tyres is crucial for vehicle safety and the driving behaviour of vehicles. In the periodic motor vehicle inspection in Germany, tyres are visually examined for cracks, damage and irregular wear and concerning legal admissibility. However, by pure visual inspection it cannot be ascertained that the tyres’ properties for force transmission are sufficient to ensure traffic safety. Different approaches to consider the tyres’ transmission capability during the vehicle inspection were developed within the research project presented in this article. Concepts with stationary equipment were considered as well as determination using defined driving tests for this purpose. The methods presented are concept studies and prototypical methods. However, the results show that some methods can be considered for future assessment of the transmission capability of the tyre during the vehicle inspection. These methods differ in terms of expected additional costs, usability and expected accuracy.
