Abstract
FE-based verification of crack width calculation according to DAfStb bulletin 466. Dedicated to Prof. Nguyen Viet Tue on the occasion of his 65 th birthday. The success story of reinforced concrete construction is closely related to the control of cracking so that crack widths in the service condition can be limited to a tolerable extent. However, more than 60 years after the first targeted research on crack width development in reinforced concrete with deformed reinforcement, there is still no consensus on how crack width should be predicted analytically. This paper refers to the mechanical model from DAfStb bulletin 466 according to König/Tue for the calculation of the maximum crack width [1] and compares the results with modern numerical simulation methods. Special attention is given to the influence of the concrete cover on the surface crack width and the importance of a slip-dependent bond stress in the calculation. It is shown that the mechanical model for the maximum crack width can be verified very well by the numerical simulation.
