Abstract
The electrical and mechanical strength of the insulation system of transformers very strongly depend on the moisture content. The water reduces the electrical breakdown field strength of the oil and the mechanical strength of the cellulose as well as it contributes to the aging of the whole insulation system. In this paper the reactions and processes which run during the operation of transformers analyzed, the effects to the strength are pointed out and diagnostic methods for the moisture determination in the insulation system compared.
